9 Things to Do during an Earthquake
You've heard the news lately. Earthquakes are happening in different parts of the world. That's why one of the most common questions lately is "What should I do?"
What should you do if you find yourself in the middle of the earthquake? Should you run or hide? Here are some of the best tips:
1. Look for an open space. One of the first things you should do is to immediately look for an open space. Search for grounds that have the least number of buildings or objects that may fall on you.
2. Hide underneath very strong structures. Keep in mind the word "strong." That's why you should never hide immediately underneath tables if they're simply made of wood or are showing signs of deterioration. Moreover, you only do this if you are located on a higher floor, and you have no more time to reach the ground floor and run into open space.
3. Use the stairs. If you still have time to run, look for the nearest exit door or use the stairs. Don't try to ride the elevator if you don't want to get stuck inside.
4. Go to a higher open location. This is actually a must if you're located very near the waters. Earthquakes often precede tsunamis or very huge rolling waves. The interval between the earthquake and the tsunami can only be a matter of seconds or minutes, so you need to run as fast as you can. You will also know if a tsunami is coming up if the water seems to flow backward.
5. Teach your family on what to do. It's essential that your entire family knows what to do during an earthquake. You can conduct drills or create contingency plans. Make sure that everyone is aware of the steps.
6. Get your emergency supplies. Prepare your emergency supplies beforehand, though. You don't need for disasters to strike before you start looking for your emergency supplies. Have them ready. Your supplies will include first-aid kits, flashlights with extra batteries, a fully charged mobile phone, canister for water, some food, and bottled water. Keep them in a place where you can easily get them.
7. Listen to broadcast. Find a way to listen to broadcast. It may be advisable to have a radio close by. A lot of the announcements are given on air. You also need to coordinate with your town council and the government.
8. Stop driving. If you're on the road, turn the ignition off and leave your vehicle. This is a must especially if you're already on a bridge or overpass.
9. Don't panic. Let the panic set in, and you'll never get to accomplish anything. It's hard to maintain composure during an earthquake, however. That's why you should keep those affirmations and subliminal messages handy. If you're a panicky person, you can store these mp3s in your iPod, and you listen to them while you're packing away things or going to an open space. You listen to them until you can feel relaxed and ready to face the disaster with more courage.
